Choosing the Best Way to Reach Your Readers

This workshop will explore how to navigate the maze of options and challenges in the changing world of publishing.

Instructors April Eberhardt and Susan Bearman bring a wealth of knowledge and experience and will discuss:

clarifying your goals
identifying your options
creating a business plan
defining your market
building your platform
raising the bar

April Eberhardt is a self-described “literary change agent” who founded her own agency to assist and advise authors as they navigate the increasingly complex world of publishing. April works with serious authors who recognize the need for professional support, and the importance of publishing in the highest-quality way, be it traditionally or independently. After 25 years as a corporate strategist and consultant, April Eberhardt joined the literary world as head reader for Zoetrope: All-Story, a literary magazine, followed by five years as an agent with two San Francisco-based literary agencies. She represents clients worldwide, and divides her time between San Francisco, New York and Paris.

Susan Bearman is an author, editor and marketing communications specialist who conducted a successful Kickstarter campaign in the fall of 2012 to fund the printing and production of her picture book, the Animal Store Alphabet Book. In addition to her own writing, Susan helps authors and small businesses by creating websites and developing their online platforms. She conducts frequent workshops on social media and also does one-on-one and small group training. She has extensive experience writing for business both online and in print, and is a regular contributor to Write It Sideways.

Join IWOC-ers as we meet and mingle over drinks and appetizers with members of the Midwest Publishing Association, who are professionals in book and media publishing—including printing, editorial, and design.

The event will include a cash bar, but IWOC will provide an ample first round of appetizers.

Non-members pay the regular $10 non-member fee. (No first-time visitor discount on this one. Sorry.)

Finding and Retaining Clients

Do you know about all the many ways you can find new clients these days? And did you know that it costs far less to retain existing clients than it does to find new ones?

This meeting will feature executive recruiter Lynn Hazan, who specializes in the area of marketing communications and is a dynamo in her field, and two long-time IWOC members: Jeff Steele, who is one of the busiest freelance writers around, and former IWOC president Sally Chapralis, who is a public relations and corporate communications pro.

These three dynamic speakers will give attendees excellent tips about what it takes not only to find clients but to keep the clients you have.

Networking, with snacks and beverages, begins at 5:00 p.m., followed by the program at 6:00 p.m.

The meeting is free for IWOC members. Non-members pay $10 with online preregistration and payment or $15 at the door.

All attendees are welcome to join IWOC members at a buy-your-own dinner at a nearby restaurant after the meeting.

Meeting Location

IWOC monthly meetings are held in the Page Smith Room at the Gratz Center, 126 E. Chestnut Street, adjacent to the historic Fourth Presbyterian Church (see map, below).

IWOC Winter Holiday Party!

Join IWOC-ers for an evening of sumptuous food, warm camaraderie, and holiday cheer (of all types) as we celebrate another year of IWOC-ness and look forward to the next. It always includes a visit from Santa himself, as well as the exchange of gently used books*.

*Don't bother to wrap the book you bring to exchange. The wrapping-paper suppliers will survive. (And if you don't have a book to bring, don't worry. You're still welcome.)
